S2, Ep. 12: The Ministry of Presence – The Call of Chaplains

It’s been almost three hours, and a murder victim still lays on the street in Kansas City. Two investigators are taking pictures from every angle. A crew is mounting laser scanners in tripods to record images to build a 3D photographic model of the scene.

In a corner, there’s a grieving family in shock and despair. Why does their loved one still lay there? What’s going on?

Then someone approaches the family and carefully explains every intricate proceeding of what’s happening—bringing them a bit of clarity into the chaos they are already experiencing. That mysterious person listens attentively to them and answers some of their questions. Someone is present… just for them. And that presence brings a little breath of comfort amid chaos.

That mysterious person is a chaplain—someone providing emotional support or spiritual care in whatever context you can think of.

In this episode, our guest speaker, Jared Altic, is a full-time pastor of a church in Kansas City. He volunteers as a chaplain with the local Police Department. As a chaplain, he provides short-term services for people in crisis (in any scene involving homicide, suicide, or unattended death). He also offers long-term support and spiritual care to police officers and other first responders coping with the toll of the job or other personal matters.

Listen to this revealing episode to immerse yourself in the call of chaplains. Discover how the ministry of presence looks like and how impactful it is.

S2, Ep. 10: The Gift of Christmas

What does Christmas mean to you?

Countless movies have explored this question. Countless sermons have been preached on this question. Countless Bible Studies have been conducted on this question, but what does Christmas mean to YOU?

In The Gift of Christmas, our Host, Ms. Yilda Rivera and her Co-Host, Todd Uebele, discuss what Christmas means to them. They also talk about the greatest gift of all, God’s gift to all mankind.

“For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

One way to see this verse is as a definition of the gospel. It starts with God’s motivation and continues with God giving us a gift.

This verse is an illustration of how much God loves us. He gave us a gift…His one and only Son…Jesus.

Join us as we talk about God’s Gift, and take heart about the intensity of God’s love, His gift, and the extent of Jesus’ mission.

S2, Ep. 7/8: God Meets You Where You Are, Parts 1 and 2

“You never know Jesus is all you need until Jesus is all you have,”—Special Guest, Michele Dalton.

Many see resilience as power from within. But after two major accidents that threatened her life, our guest, Michele Dalton, will show you how resilience is power from above when God meets you where you are.

It was 1990, the night after Thanksgiving when a 1974 Ford Bronco hit Michelle’s car head-on while she was at a stop sign. The fallout over the next year was extraordinary.  After six months in a wheelchair, Michelle couldn’t find a job; she had no money; she couldn’t afford to go back to college, and debt engulfed her.

Her faith in God and the power of worship comforted her and carried her through that season. With time and through God’s fingerprints—she will tell you what this means—she found an agency that saw great talent in her and trained her as a graphic designer. This opportunity opened a new career for her.

Then in 2016, another car accident had her pinned to the passenger seat with a 2,500-pounds black Jeep Cherokee on her lap. In this accident, she never blacked out. Thus, the memory of it all made the experience more traumatic.

She found herself again in pain and with doctors telling her that she was never going to walk. But once again, God came alongside her to face that struggle and turn hopelessness into strength, purpose, and direction.

Michelle shares with us the short prayer she muttered during that second accident while waiting to be rescued: “Jesus, save us.” And He did.

God met her where she was and restored her.

Listen to this episode and let Michele tell you how God stuck around her side and saw her through. Discover how God made beauty from the ashes. From the struggle, a new passion ignited in Michelle—writing. She’s now sowing hope and helping those who are dealing with isolation, disappointment, and depression to find the joy of the Lord.

S2, Ep 3: Flying Free

How can we taste God’s comfort amid anxiety, depression, and pain?

In Fly Away Free, our host interviews a very special guest; Ruth Fanshaw, poet, and author of the book Fly Away Free, Poems for Pilgrim Hearts. She has a neuroimmune condition and shares how in two occasions she battled anxiety, depression, and suicide thoughts. She narrates how she experienced God’s comfort and how God’s comfort allowed her to create poetry to comfort others.

“3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4, NIV)

Many times, Ruth couldn’t feel God’s presence through her emotional turmoil; but somehow, she always knew that Jesus was there with her. She was certain of God’s character and the unchanging nature of his promises. This knowledge carried her during those difficult times and provided healing and comfort enough to create within her an overflowing well of joy and praise through poetry.

Join us as Ruth also delights us with two of her poems. Listen now, and find your own rainbow—the hope of God’s promises that always remain.

S1, Ep. 13: Rising From the Dust

What is like to free yourself from the chains of anxiety, hopelessness, depressive forces, and remorse? How do you free yourself from the chains that hold you down?

In “Rising from the Dust,” special guest Pastor Tolani Abike Adewole describes how, through multiple miscarriages and inability to retain pregnancies, she was scorned by family members due to her cultural upbringing. She was hurt and labeled by others. Tolani shares how she found in the Word of God the antidote to rise from the entanglements and systems we see ourselves in. She unpacks Isaiah 52:2: “Shake off your dust…Free yourself from the chains on your neck…”

After over 10 years of fighting lies of hopelessness by standing in God’s Word, Tolani conceived and is now blessed with 4 children. She rose from the dust of being called a barren woman and being scorned by her culture. She rose from the dust and broke the chains of despair by standing strong in a space where knowing who God is and who you are in God are the key to remove those chains. “It’s from that position when you begin to rise”—Tolani reveals.

Listen now to this encouraging and uplifting episode. Discover those traits of who God is that will bring you comfort; and see how you are favored, precious, and unconditionally loved. Remove the chains of despair and rise up.
